Goalkeeping great Martin Furlong has hit the jackpot by winning €5,000 in Offaly GAA’s new 50/50 draw.

Living in New York for many years, the three-time All-Ireland SFC winning Offaly netminder won first prize in what was only the second 50/50 draw on New Year's Day. The first draw took place on December 18 and produced a €10,000 inaugural winner in James Corrigan.

Given his legendary status within Offaly and beyond, Martin Furlong’s win is certain to give the new draw a huge boost. Hailing from a famous football family in Tullamore, Martin won an All-Ireland MFC medal in 1964 before going on to win three more at senior level in 1971, ’72 and ’82. His famous penalty save from Mikey Sheehy in the 1982 All-Ireland SFC final set Offaly up a sensational win over five-in-a-row chasing Kerry and played a big part in his selection as Footballer of the Year that year.

As well as being Offaly’s most decorated footballer, Martin also holds the record number of appearances for the county. His older brothers Mick and Tom were also brilliant footballers who emigrated to the US at the height of their playing careers.

The recently-launched 50/50 draw guarantees a €5,000 prize winner every week. It takes place every Thursday at 8pm live on Offaly GAA’s Facebook page.
