Kerry made sure of a place in the All-Ireland SFC quarter-finals by seeing off Louth on comprehensive 2-21 to 1-10 scoreline in Portlaoise this afternoon.

Having led by 0-13 to 1-5 at the halfway stage, the Kingdom’s goals came from Diarmuid O’Connor and Tadhg Morley in the 46th and 61st minutes respectively, as they continued their winning ways in this year’s championship.

Louth registered their goal after just six minutes but couldn’t stay with the Munster champions after that, although a superior score difference to Monaghan sees them advancing the preliminary quarter-finals in second place in Group 4 after three outings.

The Farney men survived a late rally from Meath to win out by 1-17 to 1-14 at Kingspan Breffni and put themselves in tomorrow morning’s preliminary quarter-final draw.

Having run up an early 0-3 to 0-0 lead, Vinny Corey’s men would fall behind in the 21st minute after Matthew Costello hit their net but the points of Michael Bannigan and Killian Lavelle late in the half saw then taking the half-time lead (0-8 to 1-4).

The Ulster side were on top for large portions of the second period, netting their goal via Barry Bennett to go up by nine with 13 minutes of normal time remaining.

Meath would stage a late comeback that included points from Eoghan Frayne, James Conlon and Billy Hogan to trim their deficit down to two, but Conor McManus’s insurance point from a free would be the last score as the Royals bowed out of this year’s championship with a three-point loss.
