Jim McGuinness is looking forward to pitting his wits against his old friend Padraic Joyce in the All-Ireland SFC semi-final.

The pair were part of a star-studded IT Tralee team that won the Sigerson Cup in 1998, but their friendship will be parked until after their Donegal and Galway teams face off on the weekend after next.

"I am looking forward to that because I know one of us will progress to the final,” McGuinness said after the Ulster champions’ victory over Louth.

"The radio silence will kick in for a wee while. I might send him a cheeky text tonight but apart from that, that’ll be it for a fortnight.

"We are extremely happy to be in the semi-final, if we were told that at the start of the year, we’d have taken your arm off, so we are thankful for that.

"We are delighted for the people of Donegal here and abroad who give us massive support all the time."

The Donegal manager admitted that his side will need to be tighter at the back against Dublin’s conquerors.

"Defensively we conceded 0-18 and Louth looked threatening and dangerous at times so there are areas we have to look at, but the important thing is to progress," he continued. 

"Once you do that you have a chance to sort things out and make them better for the next day."
