Limerick star Shane O’Brien is set to line out for the University of Limerick in the 2026/27 Fitzgibbon Cup after making the move from Mary Immaculate College, according to a report from The Irish News.

The Kilmallock clubman has enjoyed a rapid rise in the Treaty colours, establishing himself as a key member of the Shannonsiders’ attack as they regained the Liam MacCarthy Cup last month with victory over Galway in the All-Ireland SHC final.

O’Brien is no stranger to Fitzgibbon Cup success either. He was part of the Mary I side that lifted the trophy in 2024 and was the competition’s leading scorer this year, finishing with 2-42 to his name.

His switch to UL will add another intriguing chapter to a rivalry that has produced some memorable college hurling in recent years.

In last February’s final, UL defeated Mary I on a 4-31 to 3-21 scoreline at Croke Park, with O’Brien contributing 1-12 for the competition’s runners-up.
