Antrim retain Leinster SHC status as Westmeath drop down to Joe McDonagh Cup

Antrim retained their Leinster senior hurling championship status with an emphatic 4-24 to 1-19 win against Westmeath at TEG Cusack Park this afternoon.
Darren Gleeson’s side had made the perfect start in Mullingar via Conal Cunning and Conor Johnston rattling in goals for them in first dozen minutes, but they still went in at the break trailing.
Six points from Ciaran Doyle and an Owen McCabe goal had the hosts ahead by 1-12 to 2-7 come half-time but it was the Saffrons that went on to dominant large portions of the second-half.
By the third quarter the Ulster side were 2-17 to 1-15 in front and goals from Eoin O’Neill and James McNaughton sent them on their way towards a 14-point victory in the end.
The result sees the Glensmen holding on to their Leinster SHC status, while Westmeath slip down to the Joe McDonagh Cup next season after Wexford’s thrilling 4-23 to 5-18 win over holders Kilkenny at Chadwicks Wexford Park this afternoon.
