Confusion reigned in the Longford SFC last weekend following a disputed point in Carrickedmond’s clash with Mullinalaghta.

Carrickedmond came from behind to earn a 2-12 each draw with the former Leinster kingpins, but the validity of the result has been thrown into doubt amid claims that referee David Tiernan mistakenly added a point to Carrickedmond’s first half tally. The match official had the half-time score as 2-6 to 0-6 in Mullinalaghta’s favour which didn’t correspond with the 2-6 to 0-5 on the scoreboard or with the notes of reporters who covered the game in Ballymahon.

While the result saw both teams qualify for the quarter-finals from Group B, it was extremely costly for Dromard who finished on the same number of points (five) as Mullinalaghta, Carrickedmond and Clonguish, but were knocked out on scoring difference.

Frankie Dolan’s Abbeylara topped the group with six points from five games.

It now remains to be seen if Dromard will raise the issue or if Mullinalaghta will appeal the the result of their game against Carrickedmond, something Longford GAA seemed to be preparing for when it posted on X that the “final group placings are subject to confirmation of referee’s reports.”
