Cavan football legend John Joe O'Reilly raises the 1947 Sam Maguire Cup

An online fundraising initiative has been launched this week that will help raise funds to commemorate Cavan football legend John Joe O’Reilly with a statue in Cavan Town.

Captain of the famous Breffni side which won the 1947 All-Ireland SFC final against Kerry at the Polo Grounds in New York, John Joe was named at centre half-back on the Gaelic Football Team of the Millennium.

He played his club football with Cornafean in the 1930s and won two All-Ireland titles with Cavan in 1947 and 1948 (both as captain) as well as 11 Ulster crowns.

It is understood that his sculpture will be located at the Market Square in Cavan Town and will be created by internationally renowned artist Seamus Connolly.

The online fundraiser was launched a few days ago to help meet the costs of the project which is said to be in region of €70,000.
