Cork began their Munster minor football championship defence with a 2-12 to 0-14 win over neighbours Kerry at Páirc Uí Chaoimh yesterday evening.

Sean Coakley and Dara Sheedy supplied the goals for the Rebels as they progressed towards a home semi-final date against Tipperary next Thursday evening.

Coakley’s 18th minute penalty was what sent the holders towards a 1-8 to 0-9 half-time lead and, after being put through by Darragh Clifford, Sheedy’s superb goal would have the Leesiders on their way to victory.

Kerry did get their deficit back down to two thanks to points from Paddy Lane, who finished with 0-7, and Daniel Kirby but they finished four short in the end and now face Limerick in the provincial semis.

The Treaty County defeated Tipperary by 1-9 to 1-6 in Mallow to advance to the last four of the Daryl Darcy Cup as ‘Phase 1’ winners.
