Roscommon may have set a new record when they retained possession for almost six minutes during last Sunday’s drawn All-Ireland SFC clash with Dublin at Croke Park.

Davy Burke’s charges played ‘keep ball’ for five minutes and 45 seconds before Ciaráin Murtagh split the posts to send them into half-time with a 0-9 to 0-5 lead. According to journalist Maurice Brosnan, Roscommon executed 77 passes, including 31 kick passes, while goalkeeper Conor Carroll touched the ball 19 times in the same passage of play.

Dublin’s frustration at not being able to get their hands on possession was summed up when their fans on Hill 16 started booing. It certainly made a change from the Dubs playing ‘keep ball’ themselves – something they were very good at when seeing out games during the hugely-successful Jim Gavin era.
