Last year's All-Ireland finalists Galway and Mayo made winning starts to their 2023 Connacht MFC campaigns last evening.
Galway opened their Tom Markham Cup defence with a 1-13 to 1-9 victory over Sligo at a blustery Markievicz Park. The hosts led by 1-4 to 0-6 at the interval thanks to an Aaron Lang goal, but Galway never looked back after Daniel Fitzmaurice netted early in the second half.
At Hyde Park, Mayo recovered from a slow start to run out comfortable 2-17 to 0-11 winners over Roscommon. Ruadhán Henry and John Curran kicked early points for the Rossies, but with Colm Lynch, Tommy Lydon, Senan Guilfoyle and Dara Neary all in fine scoring form, the visitors stormed back to take a 0-13 to 0-6 lead into the break.
Gavin Forry raised a pair of green flags in the second half to confirm Mayo's supremacy.
Meanwhile, a late Mark O'Brien point handed Clare a dramatic 0-20 to 1-16 Munster MHC victory over Waterford at Fraher Field after the hosts had battled back from a nine-point deficit to level with time almost up.
