It was third time lucky for Athleague as timely goals helped them claim the Roscommon SHC title with a 3-12 to 0-15 victory against parish rivals Tremane at their Cloonykelly grounds this afternoon.
Runners-up in the previous two finals, the hosts were determined to make 2021 their year, and after beating holders Padraig Pearses on penalties in the semi-final, they made no mistake this time around to lift the Mickey Cunniffe Cup
Eoin Ward's sixth minute goal gave them the lead, 1-0 to 0-2, for the first time, after Tremane had made the brighter start.
A Niall Kilroy free brought Tremane back on level terms by the first water-break, though they were rocked back on their heels when Cormac Kelly cut through for a second Athleague major.
Chasing a first championship crown since 1995, again Tremane battled back, Kilroy closing the first-half scoring to pull them to the front at the short whistle, 2-3 to 0-10.
Roscommon footballer Kilroy (0-12) and man-of-the-match Aengus Lyons traded scores early in the resumption, then Athleague really took the game by the scruff of the neck.
They outscored their opponents 1-7 to 0-2 between the 33rd and 57th minutes, Robbie Fallon's goal kickstarting that period of dominance.
