The Kinnitty Roscomroe team that played in the Cumann na mBunscol final

Cumann na mBunscol

Commiserations to the Kinnitty/Roscomroe National Schools team who lost their Cumann na mBunscol Final to Coolderry in St Brendan's Park last Thursday.

Coolderry had a very strong first half and lead 6-1 to 3-0 at half time.  Credit to the Kinnitty/Roscomroe girls who battled well in the second half and never gave in.  Unfortunately, they were unable to rein in the Coolderry lead with the final score reading 7-3 to 5-1.

Well done to the girls who gave it their all and did both their schools and family proud.

Under 16s

Our Under 16 team played Naomh Brid in Coolderry in their final group game in this year's Championship last Thursday evening.  Unbeaten in their matches so far, the girls wondered if they could finish the campaign with a 100% record but knew they'd have their work cut out against the hosts.

When play got underway Kinnitty almost got a dream start when a shot from Aoibhe Longworth came crashing off the cross bar but Naomh Brid cleared their lines and the chance was gone.  The hosts then hit the first score of the game when Ava Tooher hit over but a pointed free by Amber Mortimer quickly levelled the scores.  A period of stalemate followed as both teams battled to gain the upper hand but Naomh Brid managed to get their noses in front when they fired over a point.  Shortly after Amber Mortimer went on a solo run close to the end line and as she bore down on goal she slotted the ball to the back of the net.  She quickly added to it when she popped over a free but Naomh Brid finished the half stronger.  A shot bounced back off the cross bar which was finished to the net and quickly added just before half time when they pointed to leave them leading by the minimum at the break.

When play resumed after the break, a point from Aoibhe Longworth levelled the scores before a 45 from Amber put Kinnitty in front.  A couple of quick points by Naomh Brid helped them regain the lead but with ten minutes to go Kinnitty upped the anti and hit two goals in two minutes, courtesy of Amber and Kate Harris.

Credit to Naomh Brid however who refused to lie down and again finished the half the stronger and quickly replied with a point.  The home team were increasing the pressure at this stage and got their rewards when they found the back of the Kinnitty net to leave just a point between the teams.  With both management teams encouraging their teams it was Naomh Brid that got the decisive break when they hit over a point to level the scores just before the final whistle.

Well done to both teams on a very exciting match and our girls finish the campaign by topping their group and now progress to the semi final.
