When the Boyne Community School in Trim was established Gaelic Games were not high on the pecking order, more by omission rather than intent. Lunch hours were cut short which meant not enough time to head to 'the field' to kick or puck a ball and very soon the school dropped out of the A section in football and the B section in hurling, where the previous St Michael's Diocesan/CBS had operated competitively for a good number of years. And as luck would have it the most successful team to emerge from the Boyne Community School since it's formation seen it reach the All Ireland Hurling 'C' Final in 2019 only to have the competition abandoned due to the Covid emergency. A competitive Trim school would be a tremendous bonus to county teams of both codes, after all I attribute the phenomenon turn around from a 10 point hammering in '95 to All Ireland success in '96 to the addition of two St Michael's boys namely Darren Fay and Mark O'Reilly in the latter year. Also Gormanstown ceasing to be a boarding school has impacted negatively on Meath's impact on colleges' football. Probably in time the newly established secondary schools in the highly populated centers in the SE of the county may make an impact, should the County Board give a lead. Over to you folks!!

Good timing with post on a day when Nobber played St Marys Drogheda in a North leinster final and won 1 09 to 1 05. Between the two teams there were 19 lads who were on Meath Minor squads in past few years, including 9 all ireland medal winners. St Pats in navan were a force many years ago , they were beaten by a Derry team i think about 8/9 years ago, since then have done nothing of note, gotten some hammerings along the way but yet you could still hear that Johnny is a great footballer cos he was on Pats panel. Dunshaughlin have had some very good teams too. The schools benefit from club players who get their coaching primarily at their club, i wouldn't overplay the importance of schools football in county success. Analyst is correct. and I would add that St Pats did very well when there were good number of good players supplied from the local clubs. You will only have good school teams with good players and the clubs are the supply line-not the other way around! browncows (Meath) - Posts: 2342 - 13/02/2022 13:40:25 2400089 Link 9 |

crazy to hear stat on the Sunday Game last night that Derek "taught" everyone of the the Ballygunner squad , bar one . Not sure we ever had that "tradition" in our schools where either Football or Hurling is NUMBER 1 ...Yes St Pats had that some of that culture at one stage. ..but in the Kerrys, Kilkennys, Tyrones, ...if anyone thinks that the County Boards in those counties are "passive" About what Teachers end up in what Schools ...well they are kidding themselves
