U14 Div 2 Cup final: Ballivor complete impressive double

After claiming the Division 3 Football League title earlier in the year Ballivor completed the double after this win over St. Colmcilles in the Under 14 Division 2 Cup final at Ballinlough. PHOTOS

Proceeding got underway after the National Anthem.

St. Colmcilles took an early lead with a two pointer from Adam Cunningham and a single from full forward James Collins. Ballivor hit back and were level inside the opening ten minutes thanks to a Daithi Bermingham two pointer and a Sean McNamara white flag. Collins put the Cilles back in front with the games opening goal but for the remainder of the half Ballivor dominated. Rian O’Dea and Samuel Dolan pointed before the impressive Jamie Bell added 1-1 and his team went to the half time huddle 1-6 to 1-3 in front.

Bell extended that lead with an early two pointer and raised another white flag minutes later. But the 'Cilles' began to grow into the game. Beau Biggins, Leo Geraghty (2 pointer) and Collins narrowed the lead to a point. Bell came to the rescue again with his second goal, a pile driver giving 'Cilles' keeper Sonny Browning no chance. The Seasiders refused to give up and with Collins to the fore that lead was back to one with five minutes remaining.

The 'Cilles' attack were creating numerous chances in the last 15 minutes but time and again they were denied by the brilliance of Ballivor keeper Evan Kelly. A brace from Bermingham before the final whistle put the seal on a brilliant season for this talented Ballivor Under 14 squad.

After the game members of the Lynch family presented the Tom Lynch Cup to Sean McNamara. 

In honour of Tom Lynch St. Colmcille’s retired their number 12 jersey for the night and presented a framed jersey to Tom’s parents Derek and Nikki, his brother Charlie and sister Lucy. One of the finest sporting gestures you will see all year.
