Navan O’Mahony’s were left to rue a number of missed opportunities as St Pats edged the opening round of the JACFC Div 1 in a game that saw six goals in Walterstown.

 O’Mahony’s made the perfect start, racing into an early lead with points from Jack Bellamy and Eoin Joyce before Bellamy converted a penalty after just five minutes.

After a Ronan Clarke score, St Patricks got their first score on the board after seven minutes. Clarke added another point before Louis Collins extended the lead with an excellent two-pointer. A further point from Clarke had O’Mahony’s 1-7 to 0-2 ahead after 14 minutes. Two goals in the space of a minute brought St Pats right back into it

Points from James O’Reilly and Thomas Cully were followed by a goal from Clarke and an Eoin Joyce free gave O’Mahony’s an eight point lead at the break.

St Pat’s soon ate into the deficit, scoring two points in quick succession and finding the net again in the thirty-fifth minute. 

O’Mahony’s responded through O’Reilly and a superb two-point free from Bellamy, while Joyce added another free to put O’Mahony’s 2-14 to 3-4 ahead midway through the second half.

St Pats responded quickly with a few scores, including a forty-ninth minute goal, and the sides were level with ten minutes remaining. A Joyce free put O’Mahony’s in front but St Pats kicked two more points and took the lead. A Bellamy score drew the sides level once again but the final score came from St Patricks to claim the two points on offer.
