Moynalvey slumped to a four point defeat in the opening round of the Meade Farm Intermediate Football Championship played at Simonstown on Sunday evening 9th August.

Having got off to the best possible start and leading by the minimum at the break, Moynalvey were outscored by 1-5 to 0-3 in the second half to see Paudie Finnegan’s Meath Hill pick up the two points on offer here.

Moynalvey got off to a lightening start as they had the first green flag raised when within the opening sixty seconds Vinny Walsh finished to the back of Dominic Yorke’s net.

Cormac Sheehy opened the North Meath side’s account in the third minute, but a Mark O’Sullivan point and a sweetly struck two point free by Adam Murphy had Moynalvey five points to the good after eight minutes, 1-3 to 0-1.

Meath Hill responded with a point which was countered by county panelist Cillian O’Sullivan. Vinny Walsh and Cormac Sheehy traded points leaving it 1-5 to 0-3 after twelve minutes.

Whatever early Moynalvey momentum was then switched to the side in blue as after consultation with his umpire referee Joseph Curran signalled for a penalty which Meath Hill goalkeeper Dominic Yorke strided forward to expertly dispatch to the back of Conor Egan’s net, 1-5 to 1-3 midway through the opening half.

The margin was reduced to the minimum with another Meath Hill point, but another Adam Murphy two pointer this time from play in the 22nd minute extended Moynalvey’s advantage to three, 1-7 to 1-4.

A pair of Cormac Sheehy frees left a kick of the ball between the sides as they retreated up the Simonstowm steps for the half time break, 1-7 to 1-6.

Two minutes after the restart Meath Hill had that equalizing point, but four minutes later a Cillian O’Sullivan free handed the advantage back to Moynalvey. A Gary Breslin point levelled matters and ten minutes into the second half Meath Hill took the lead for the first time with a Breslin free, 1-9 to 1-8.

The next score proved to be the decisive one, a wayward free kick from Padraic Harnan fell into the hands of a Meath Hill player who quickly transferred forward, Adam Murphy looked to have saved Moynalvey with a brilliant brave block, but the ball broke to Gary Breslin who tucked it away to the corner of the Moynalvey net soccer style, 2-9 to 1-8 at the three quarter hour mark.

That man Sheehy who had been a thorn in Moynalvey’s side all evening added another for the Monaghan/Louth border side leaving five between the sides with as many minutes remaining, 2-10 to 1-8.

A Padraic Harnan advanced mark and a point from substitute Anthony Forde gave Moynalvey some hope as the game entered added time, but the game’s top scorer Cormac Sheehy had the last say pointing a free deep into allocated added time due to an earlier serious looking injury to Gary Breslin.

So it ended 2-11 to 1-10 and Moynalvey sit bottom of the group C table following this defeat and Blackhall Gaels’ and Dunsany opening round draw.

Next up for Moynalvey is Blackhall Gaels in round two on Saturday 22nd August.
