Sean McDermott heads for the Longwood goal during the SHC B round 1 clash against Longwood at Athboy

Navan O’Mahony’s 1-14
Longwood 2-20

It was a disappointing start to the Senior B HC for Navan O’Mahony’s, losing out to Longwood who put in a second half performance to secure their win on the day.

A great start for O’Mahony’s saw Jack Walsh find the net in the first play of the match before he and Killian Murphy added a point each to go five points up after three minutes. For the next few minutes, this score was maintained as Walsh responded to two Longwood points with points from play.

The gap narrowed in the eighth minute when Longwood raised a green flag and followed up with a free two minutes later. A Walsh free after a foul on Lorcan McDermott and a good score under pressure from Paddy Dillon left three points in it.

Longwood hit three scores to draw level in the twenty-third minute and could have gone ahead in this time only for blocks by Eoghan Nugent and an Evan Brady dispossession. Three quick points from Walsh, Darragh Connell and Tom Condon and a late Longwood score left two in it at the break.

Navan O’Mahony’s 1-10
Longwood 1-08

Longwood got the first score of the second half, ninety seconds in and reduced the deficit to the bare minimum. A minute later, the sides drew level with a free from Longwood before they took the lead for the first time.

A Walsh free was O’Mahony’s only score of the third quarter at the end of which Longwood led by three. In the next seven minutes, Murphy pointed from a free but Longwood stretched their lead.

In the final minutes, when O’Mahony’s needed a goal to have any chance, it came at the opposite end of the field, securing the result for Longwood who ran out as nine point winners.
