Kilmainham 3-10, Curraha 0-21
Kilmainham were looking to continue their good league form with a home tie to Curraha on Saturday 27th June 2026 in Kilmainham. The lads had a brilliant win against Dunderry in the last round. Curraha were sitting on 10 points and were still in contention for promotion while we sat on 6 points in the table and were in need of the points to avoid relegation from division 3.
Curraha are a lot of people’s favourites for the junior A. In the early stages of this match you could see why. They dominated us around the middle and won most breaks for the opening 20 minutes of this match. They broke with speed and power. Their returning county man Diarmuid Moriarty and their full forward kicked some big scores with a very strong wind in Kilmainham. Our lads were digging deep and fighting for scraps around the middle. Mickey Newman did hit a 2 pointer from a free after 6 minutes to settle us, then his brother Mark kicked one from play. We were able to get scores once we got past Curraha’s high press. Curraha hit 3 two pointers in a row in 4 minutes. They followed this up with 2 points from play. Mickey Newman then hit a point from a free, Curraha responded with another point from play. Curraha were in the driving seat but a brilliant move by our lads resulted in Ger Morgan burying the ball to the back of the Curraha net. Michael Hoey then clipped over a free on 29 minutes to bring the deficit back to 7 points as half time approached. A poor half by Kilmainham that was dominated by Curraha but they were playing with a strong wind.
Half-time score: Kilmainham 1-5, Curraha 0-14.
Our lads were looking to kick on in this match with a strong wind behind them, unfortunately the wind seemed to magically disappear! Kilmainham made two substitutions at half-time with Larry Morgan coming on for Shane Morgan and Jamie O’ Sullivan coming on for Lewis Curran. Declan Mullen did kick the first point of the second half to reduce the deficit to 5 points. Curraha replied with a free. Mickey Newman then burst through the Curraha defence to score a brilliant goal to bring it back to 3 points. Curraha responded with another point from a free. Mickey Hoey was then hauled down by a Curraha player as he went through on goal after a brilliant pass by Mickey Newman. The referee correctly pointed to the spot and issued the Curraha player a black card. Michael Hoey stepped up to bury the ball into the Curraha net to bring the game back to a point. Kilmainham created another well worked goal chance on 14 minutes. Conor Kilgallen got in behind the Curraha defence. His arm looked to have been pulled as he went by a player. His shot came off the post and went wide. A big let off for Curraha! Curraha then punished us at the other end with the next 3 points, two from play and one from a free. Mark Newman then scored his second point of the match with a nice finish off his left foot. Curraha were a head by 3 points with 7 minutes left. Dylan Morgan, who was only on the field, found himself in on the Currha goal, unfortunately his effort was hit straight at the keeper
and was cleared to safety. Curraha then went up the other end and scored another point from a free to leave 4 points in it. Kilmainham were not giving up. Dylan Morgan tapped over a free and Mickey Newman scored a good point from play to bring the margin down to 2 points. Unfortunately, this was as good as it got as the full-time whistle sounded. Disappointment for our lads. A game that we probably weren’t at our best but still had enough chances to claim a win. The work rate and effort of our lads can’t be questioned. We must regroup and go again for the last round of the league against Donaghmore Ashbourne in 2 week's time as we look to stay in division 3.
Next up, our second team play Moylagh in round 8 of the division 11 A league. The match is in Moylagh on Tuesday 30th June at 8pm. A big thank you to everyone that came out to support us in this match. There was a great crew of former players, community members and young kids cheering us on. A massive thank you to our brilliant committee members for providing us with tea and light refreshments after the match. Something they do after every match. Thank you!
