FL Div 4: Missed opportunity for Moynalty

June 19, 2026

Moynalty's Paddy Byrne

Moynalty 0-17 Longwood 3-09

Moynalty missed a valuable opportunity to move clear of the relegation zone when they suffered a narrow defeat to Longwood. A late Longwood goal on the stroke of full-time proved decisive. Although Moynalty responded with a two-pointer deep into injury time to reduce the deficit to a single point, they simply ran out of time in their search for an equaliser. The result leaves them firmly back in the battle to avoid the drop heading into the final rounds of the league.

Paddy Byrne was once again in excellent form and opened Moynalty's account after 10 minutes, having fallen behind to an early Longwood score. The visitors struck for the first goal of the game in the 18th minute to open up a gap between the sides. Moynalty responded well, creating several good scoring opportunities as they sought to close the deficit. Longwood continued to pose a threat, but scores from Paul Lynch and Paddy Byrne brought the home side back to within the minimum by the interval.

Half-Time: Moynalty 0-06 Longwood 1-04

Longwood made the stronger start to the second half, applying early pressure and finding the net for a second time before adding further points to stretch their advantage. Jude Gilsenan reduced the gap with a well-taken point in the fifth minute, while Podge O'Connor and Paddy Byrne also added scores. Moynalty were now beginning to gain the upper hand around midfield and looked the more likely side. Consecutive two-pointers from Paddy Byrne in the eighth and ninth minutes swung the momentum firmly in Moynalty's favour and saw them take the lead for the first time in the match.

Longwood, however, responded impressively with a purple patch of their own, registering three unanswered points. The game was now being played at a frantic pace, with Bryan McCormack and the returning Ronan Lynch keeping Moynalty in touch with important scores.

As the contest entered its closing stages, Longwood edged ahead once more and, on the 30-minute mark, a marauding half-back burst forward before finishing brilliantly to the back of Johnny Lynch's net. Moynalty responded immediately when they won the resulting kick-out and Joey Gilsenan calmly converted a two-pointer to leave just a point between the sides. Unfortunately for the home side, that proved to be their final score. They did create one last opportunity to snatch a draw, but the effort drifted wide, leaving Longwood to claim the victory.
