An understrength Donaghmore Ashbourne suffered their fourth league defeat ( defereed round 3) at the hands of neighbours Ratoath in Ashbourne on Tuesday night.
The game, a refixture due the Feis Cup final saw Ratoath make good use of the wind at their back in the opening period to register a seventeen-point lead with Daithi Mc Gowan hitting a number of two pointers throughout the half. Although Donaghmore Ashbourne gave a better performance in the second half the deficit was too large to overcome.
Kevin Fenton opened the scoring for Donaghmore Ashbourne with a point on 2 minutes and by the time Cillian Hegarty got the home side’s second point on 12 minutes Ratoath had already raised the orange flag three times. The visitors extended their lead with two single points and another two-pointer before Kevin Cully pointed on 18 minutes. Ratoath found the net on 19 minutes and finished the half with three two-pointers and a single to have a very comfortable lead at the interval.
While Donaghmore Ashbourne needed to start strong in the second half it was Ratoath who got the first two scores with a goal on 34 minutes and a point on 38 minutes. Despite the deficit the home side didn’t give up and registered a number of points with Andy Colgan converting a 45 on 41minutes to start a mini revival. Kevin Fenton from play and Andrew Tormey from a free raised the orange flag on 43 and 47 minutes respectfully. Cully and Daniel Doherty added two more single points with Tormey getting another two-pointer with about 7 minutes left on the clock.
Although Ratoath got their second goal of the half on 56 minutes, Andrew Tormey’s quick thinking with a tap and go and a low shot to the corner of the net caught the Ratoath defence on 59 minutes. The final score of the game came a minute later when Michael O’Sullivan forced the ball into the net from close range after a goalmouth scramble.
Donaghmore Ashbourne will need to get a few players back and to get a couple of wins under their belt if they are to retain their Division 1 status.
