St Brigids 4-10 Moynalty 0-12
Moynalty made the trip to Ballinacree on Monday evening but were quickly brought back down to earth by a powerful performance from the home side, who struck four goals in the opening half to lay the foundation for a comprehensive victory.
Sean McMahon opened the scoring for the visitors following early pressure, but St Brigid’s responded almost immediately with the first of their goals, rounding goalkeeper Johnny Lynch before finishing to the net. A second goal followed shortly after, coming from another defence-splitting move that left Lynch with no chance. Moynalty did begin to settle and applied some pressure, with points from Paddy Byrne and Eoin Gilsenan narrowing the gap. However, the home side continued to dominate, powering through the middle for their third goal. McMahon added his second score for Moynalty, but it was quickly cancelled out by a composed response from St Brigid’s.
Moments later, a fourth goal from the home side left Moynalty facing an uphill battle. Despite their efforts and work rate, they found it difficult to break down an impressive St Brigid’s defence. Johnny Lynch added a two-pointer late in the half, but St Brigid’s responded once more, leaving them firmly in control at the interval.
HT: St Brigids 4-02 Moynalty 0-6
Moynalty rang the changes at half-time, with Jude Gilsenan and Odhran McMahon introduced in place of the unlucky Cormac Kearney and Sean McMahon, though in truth several others could also have made way after a difficult opening period. The changes appeared to have a positive effect, as Moynalty started the second half brightly with scores from Pauric O Connor and two from the industrious Bryan McCormack. However, St Brigid’s quickly sensed the potential for a Moynalty resurgence and reasserted control through their physical, disciplined approach.
Defending in numbers and closing down space effectively, the home side gave Moynalty little opportunity to build momentum. Their defensive organisation was particularly impressive, and combined with the speed of their counter-attacks, they dominated the next 15 minutes, registering seven unanswered points, including a two-pointer. Paddy Byrne, who worked tirelessly throughout, eventually halted the run with a well-taken free. St Brigid’s, however, finished strongly, adding two more points before Byrne had the final say for Moynalty with a late two-pointer.
Further substitutions saw Christy Cahill, Eanna Bennett and Cathal Donoghue introduced, but by then the game was beyond Moynalty, as St Brigid’s ran out convincing winners at the final whistle.
