Castletown's Adam Wogan

Castletown 1-11 Kilmainham 2-9

Castletown suffered their first defeat of the year at the hands of Kilmainham in round 3 of the league on Thursday night in Castletown. The fixture was a refixture from the previous week to cater for Castletown's Corn na Boinne final 6 days previous. Castletown played the majority of the 2nd half with 13 men following 2 red cards 2 minutes apart in the 36th and 38th minute but still had numerous chances to have won the game had the chances been converted.

Castletown made the quickest start to the game with the 1-1 scored within the first 5 minutes , Daragh Weldon with the point and a great goal from Adam Wogan to open the scoring. A free and a 2 pointer from play from Kilmainham had the visitors just the point behind with 10 minutes gone on the clock. The first quarter of the game was very evenly matched with a further pointed free for Rian McConnell which was quickly matched by a 2 point free from Kilmainhams number 10 who was very lively all game. For the next 12 minutes Castletown looked to be settling into the game and gathering momentum by getting the next 4 scores unanswered leading up to half time - Daragh Weldon (0-2 (1free)) and McConnell (0-2 (1 free)). However Kilmainham looked to the veteran Mickey Newman who rattled the back of the Castletown net on the 27th minute to leave it just the single point between the sides. Daragh Weldon registered another score from play a minute later to leave it two points between the sides at the break.

Halftime score: Castletown 1-7 Kilmainham 1-5

The 2nd half started exactly how we wouldn't have wanted - Kilmainham leveling up the game (1 free , 1 from play) and 2 extremely harsh red cards for Castletown all within the opening 8 minutes of the half.  With Castletown now down to 13 players and the game level, Daragh Weldon once again stepped up with a brilliant 2 pointer from play to put two between the sides on 43 minutes. Throughout the game the was plenty of mistakes, wides and turnovers from both sides. It was another 8 minutes before Kilmainham registered their next point from a free on 51 minutes. This was followed in quick succession with another goal which put the visitors ahead for the first time in the game on 52 minutes. Rian McConnell looked to have gotten us the leveling point with a pointed 2 pointer free on 60 minutes, however play continued and Kilmainham worked the winning score from play heading into the 63rd minute. Castletown in this time had shots to drop short, missed frees and a goal chance that looked over the line but wasn't given. In the end it was the narrowest of margins between the sides. Disappointing result following Fridays nights delight at winning the Corn na Boinne but we will go again next week when we welcome Curraha to the pitch for round 4.
