Seneschalstown 3-12 Simonstown Gaels 1-11
Seneschalstown claimed 2026 Reserve Cup Division 2 honours, for the second time in three years, with a comprehensive victory over Simonstown Gaels in Fr. Tully Park on Tuesday night.
Having trailed briefly at the start of the game, once Seneschalstown moved ahead with a goal from Seán Commons they moved through the gears and ensured the trophy would not have to leave their home ground following the presentation after the game.
This was the second meeting of the sides in the competition with the Furze men also recording a victory in the round robin phase by two points.
On Tuesday, the Navan side started quickest with the opening two points from play inside four minutes. Seneschalstown got going after five minutes with Seán Commons on target from play.
After ten minutes Seneschalstown moved in front with their first goal. Ross Mullen intercepted a stray kickout and placed Commons through on goal who emphatically finished to the roof of the net. A minute later a fine team move involving a number of players ended with Liam Maguire piercing a hole in the Simonstown defence before laying the ball off to Aran Carey who kicked a fine left footed point.
There was a nine minute lull until the next score and Niall McCabe took matters into his own hands after neither team could trouble the scoreboard operator and he just launched an effort from 50 metres off the outside of his boot which had plenty on it to land over the bar. Simonstown pulled a point back but Seneschalstown only increased their advantage further moments later.
Ross Mullen’s point attempt was wayward but Neil Darby did very well to palm the ball back into play and Alex Finnegan was quickest to the loose ball to finish soccer style beyond the advancing keeper.
The two goals was the difference between the teams by the 25th minute after Seán Davis kicked a left footed free after a Simonstown point.
Davis from play, and Neill Darby also added points before the short whistle as Seneschalstown lead by nine which could have been less had David Gordon not tipped an effort heading for the bottom left corner around the post in the final few minutes of the half.
Seneschalstown continued on the front foot after the resumption with Sean Commons on target from play again. Owen Mullen followed up in the 37th minute before the same player swapped passes with Liam Maguire before finishing to the net to move Seneschalstown thirteen points to the good and the game all over bar the shouting.
As the game entered the final quarter, Seneschalstown took the opportunity to empty the bench and give minutes to the wider squad. Two further scores from Davis, one each from play and a free came either side of a reply from the visitors before Simonstown did enjoy a spell of dominance to reduce the gap down to six points coming into injury time which included a 53rd minute goal.
Seneschalstown did have the final say of the hour when David Fox added his name to the scoresheet as the celebrations began for the men in yellow shortly afterwards.
Following the game, Neil Darby was presented with the Greg Hogge Cup by county board Chairman Jason Plunkett and members of the Hogge family.
