Navan O’Mahony’s 3-06 Oldcastle 0-12

A gale-force wind in Oldcastle on St Patrick’s morning meant that this first round match in the Div 2 FL was always going to be a game of two halves.

O’Mahony’s had the advantage in the first half and opened the scoring within sixty seconds through Cormac Nugent. After eight minutes, O’Mahony’s led by 1-04 to a point thanks to a Louis Collins point, an Aodhan Mallon two-pointer and a goal from Shane McCarthy after a rebounded Ronan Clarke shot.

The Oldcastle netminder was deemed to be taking too long to kick the ball out after the goal and Mallon split the posts with the resulting free. The lead was stretched to ten points in the eleventh minute when Nugent found the net. Both sides only managed a point in the final twenty minutes of the half. O’Mahony’s went in with a ten point advantage, having left a lot of scores behind them shooting with the wind. A great block from Diarmuid O Bric prevented a score late in the half.

Against the wind, O’Mahony’s knew that they would be up against it. Oldcastle faced similar problems in the second half and struggled to convert their possession into scores.

After Oldcastle reduced the gap to six points, midfielder Evan Coffey got O’Mahony’s only score of the second half to break the momentum of the home side. Another ten minutes passed with no score, before Oldcastle kicked a two-pointer after a sideline was brought in to the edge of the arc for dissent.

Hard work was required to get the victory and this was in no short supply from the Navan lads. O Bric, Darragh Murphy, Darragh Magure, Eoghan Nugent and Paddy Dillon were among those to stand out for work-rate with key clearances and interceptions.
