For the second year in a row Trim and Moynalvey proved inseparable in the opening round of the football league, last year the J.M Food Services Div. 2 opener and this year the Husqvarna Centre P.R Coyne Div. 1 opener played in St. Lomans Park Trim on Sunday morning 15th March.
Trim 1-12
Moynalvey 1-12
A repeat opening round league fixture of the past two years between the two sides saw the sides inseparable in the 2026 opener, just as was the case in last year’s Div. 2 opening round between the sides.
Moynalvey got off to a great start with three points on the board in the opening seven minutes, the first score a two pointer from Padraic Harnan in the fourth minute, followed up three minutes later with a Cillian O’Sullivan free, 0-3 to 0-0.
David Lernihan opened the home side’s account in the 9th minute, but then came the game’s first green flag, a brilliantly weighted Cillian O’Sullivan pass in to Vinny Walsh saw the latter excellently finish low back across Eoin O’Reilly in the Trim nets, 1-3 to 0-1 with eleven minutes played.
A trio of unanswered Trim points, a free from Sean Foley (2) and Lernihan reduced the deficit to two points, 1-3 to 0-4 with seventeen minutes played.
Then a serious injury to Trim full back Gerry Dwane saw a ten minute break in play whereby the teams retreated to the dressing room while he was treated in the small parallelogram before being removed from the pitch and substituted before the game resumed with an Adam Murphy ’45.
Two frees, the first a two pointer from Cillian O’Sullivan followed by a Shane Lenehan free after he himself was fouled left it 1-6 to 0-4 on the thirty minute mark.
The large amount of added time owing to Dwane’s injury saw Ken Robinson’s side reel off the final three points of the half, frees from Sean Foley and David Lernihan along with a point from Sean Fitzgerald, leaving two between the sides at half time, 1-6 to 0-7.
Conditions turned storm like with a blazing sleeting windy shower making conditions slippery underfoot for the third quarter. Vinny Walsh extended Moynalvey’s lead to three with a free within ninety seconds of the restart.
Trim sent over their first two pointer with a David Lernihan free from outside the arc in the 5th minute of the second half, 1-7 to 0-9.
The sides were level for the first time when Trim full forward Gary Fleming pointed in the 36th minute, 1-7 to 0-10.
A brace of points for both sides saw them inseparable with thirteen minutes remaining, Moynalvey’s points from Brian O’Reilly and a Vinny Walsh free, 1-9 to 0-12 with 47 minutes played.
Moynalvey looked to finish strongly with a Vinny Walsh free and a pair of points from substitute James Kelly looking to have sealed the two points on offer for Barry O’Keeffe’s charges, 1-12 to 0-12 with fifty eight minutes played.
Despite having led from throw in to the 5th minute of added time, just as was the case in last year’s Div. 2 opening round game, Trim found a late score with the last attack to rescue a point from this game, 1-12 apiece at referee Keith Sheerin’s full time whistle.
In the fifth minute of added time, a hopeful punt along the leisure centre end line by David Lernihan across goal found Eoin O’Connor rushing into the edge of the square to fist home past Moynalvey ‘keeper Conor Egan to the jubilation of the Trim players, management and supporters alike to take a share of the spoils.
Best for Moynalvey were Brian O’Reilly, Darren Brennan, Padraic Harnan, Shane Lenehan, Cathal McCabe and Vinny Walsh.
