Meath Camogs brought no love to St Lomans Park in Mullingar today as they broke the Westmeath girls hearts on St Valentines Day with a 2-09 v 1-06 win in baltic conditions.
It was a low scoring and both teams were probably trying to adjust to the biting crisp wind in the first half. With half time approaching it looked like the Royals were heading into the dressing room with a 1 point deficit, but the last play of the half seen a ball fall short from Aoife Carey, unable to get past the two goal side defenders Ciara Foley played a clever pass to the incoming Olivia O Halloran who made no mistake in putting it past Aoife Corcoran in the neighbours net to lead 1-4 to 0-5.
Meath looked nervous in the first half but left all signs of nervousness in the dressing room and came out a more positive and relaxed team. Even the impressive goal from Megan Dowdell didn't rattle Meath, they replied with a second green flag, this time courtesy of Emma Regan. Roisin Heaney was on frees today and popped over 4 in total. Abbye Donnelly had a player of the match performance. A win is always a good start, but Stephen Shiel will be under no illusions that next weeks game will be another big challenge for the girls and its re-set and prepare for the Kingdom in Trim.
