Stackallen N.S. 4-8
St. Anne’s N.S., Navan 1-5
Stackallen National School claimed their first Meath Cumann na mBunscol football title since 1996 with this impressive win over St. Annes P.S. Navan in the first game of the day, the Girls Division 2/3 Shield final.
Ellie Cournane gave the winners the perfect start with a goal. Katie Dardis replied with a point for St. Annes but for the remainder of the half Stackallen dominated. Points from Cournane, Kate Timmons (3) and a goal from Sophie Brien gave the girls in Maroon and Navy a 2-4 to 0-2 interval lead.
Stackallen extended that lead early in the second half with an Abbi Fay goal while Cournane (2) and Saibh McCormack raised white flags. Despite the scoreline St. Anne’s kept going and were rewarded with points from Dardis (2) and Holly Dunphy. Dardis found the Stackallen net with five minutes remaining to give her team some hope but almost immediately joint captain Cournane was in for her second major and the title was heading to Stackallen.
After the game joint captains Ellie Cournane and Kate Timmons were presented with the Division 2/3 Shield to the delight of their large following.
