Dunboyne's Sinead Hackett

St Peter’s, Dunboyne (Meath)…4-12

St Cillian’s (Offaly)…1-01

To be the first to achieve something in life is extremely special. Stating the blindingly obvious, it’s historic. Which is an amazing feeling at the time, naturally, but, of even greater significance is that in the weeks, months, years and generations ahead, when people look back, they will see that yours was the group who made the breakthrough for the rest to follow.

So it was that the scent of history filled the air on the Rooske Road on Sunday last as – after ending the club’s 19 year wait for a county title at adult level, Dunboyne broke further new ground when qualifying for a provincial final in Camogie for the first time. Again, this is pointing out the glaringly apparent, but, not even the record breaking side who won five county titles on the spin managed to do it.

However, in another illustration of the wheels of time going full circle, there are links to the stars of yore and the current trailblazers. In the persons of Dearbhla Curran whose mother Dolores (nee Maguire) lined out in those glory days as did Maeve and Sinead Clince’s mam Teresa (nee Lynch).

There will be plenty of other nuggets of what one might call long distance inspiration when the girls and their mentors will hope a big crowd will indeed follow them down to Carlow this coming Sunday when they tackle Lazarian’s at the SETU Campus (formerly Carlow RTC). Throw in is slated for 3pm.
