Moyfenragh, boosted by the inclusion of Meath development prospects Mark Coffey and Ciarán McCarrick, had to withstand a late Tara surge to pick up their first win in the Regional Football Championship at Dunganny.

An outstanding individual goal from county hurling star Nicky Potterton towards the end of the first half proved crucial.

Luke Jennings gave Tara a great start with a two pointer. Mickey Burke got the winners off the mark soon after before Jenning raised his first white flag. Joey Farrelly’s charges took control of the next ten minutes and were rewarded with fine scores from Potterton, Damien Healy, Evan Fitzgerald and Harry Hogan. Two 2 pointers from Paul Kelly gave Tara a 0-8 to 0-7 lead before Potterton gave keeper Eoghain Kiernan no chance for the games only goal. Half time Moyfenragh 1-7 Tara 0-8.

The sides were level 1-9 to 0-12 midway through the second half before referee Peter O’Halloran issued a red card to Moyfenragh midfielder Damien Healy. With five minutes remaining Potterton landed a brilliant two pointer and Moyfenragh looked set to pick up the points. Tara kept battling, Craig Gilsenan and Paul Kelly pointed to leave the minimum between the teams but despite dominating possession they could not find the score to level matters.

Tara won their opening round while Moyfenragh shared the points with Boyne Valley.
