Lomans Park played host to the first instalment of the Meath Cumann na mBunscol football finals. Five titles were down for decision. It was the first time in over 30 years that these finals were not played at Pairc Tailteann.
The day concluded with the Girls Division 1 Shield final. Having lost out to Longwood in last year’s decider O’Growney N.S., Athboy claimed their first title with two points to spare over St. Joseph’s N.S., Navan.
The Navan school got a great start with a Olivia Wasiak goal. Athboy hit back with a brace of points from Mya Kelly, one from Alannah-Mai O’Rourke and a fine goal from Shania Kerr to lead 1-3 to 1-0. Back came St. Joseph’s. The impressive Lily Dandy and Alesha Lynch raised free flags to put their school in front again. An Éabha Gough goal just before the half time whistle gave O’Growney a narrow 2-4 to 3-1 lead.
Dandy had St. Joseph’s ahead with the first three scores of the second half. Once again Athboy hit back. Kelly goaled and a Gough point had them in front before Dandy tied the game up with five minutes remaining. O’Growney dug deep and points from O’Rourke and Poppy Nugent sealed a memorable win.
After the game May Kelly was presented with the Girls Division 1 Shield.
