Navan O’Mahony’s 2-14 Trim 2-07
After a wait of twenty-two years, Navan O’Mahony’s claimed the minor Division 1 hurling title in style on Saturday afternoon in front of a large crowd in Kiltale.
Midfielder Max Condon got the scoring opened with a point from play before Harry McGuirk added another score. Three points separated the sides following a very impressive sixth minute score from Bobby Gaffney.
This lead was nullified when Trim found the net from play just shy of the ten-minute mark. O’Mahony’s lulled for a period and two scores from Trim gave them the advantage while O’Mahony’s didn’t take the best advantage of the wind.
Cormac Fitzsimons pointed from a free to reduce the gap but Trim responded in turn immediately. Around this time, the rain began to get heavier and the wind showed no sign of dying down. Fitzsimons added another free but once again Trim were quick to do likewise at the opposite end of the pitch.
With five minutes to go, Darragh Ward added a point from play. With Trim scoring at the opposite end of the pitch, they looked to be going in with the lead at the break. Condon and Fitzsimons hit two late scores to leave the sides level.
Navan O’Mahony’s 0-08 Trim 1-05
It looked to be advantage Trim in the second half, with a strong wind behind them. Eoghan McDermott rattled the net within five minutes of the resumption before Trim managed to pull one back.
After a Fitzsimons free left three in it, a Trim goal from long distance drew the sides level again. O’Mahony’s responded well and added two points from Fitzsimons and Condon.
Five points separated the sides when Ruairi McDermott scored a goal and O’Mahony’s looked in control from here on in, playing some great hurling. Daniel Carolan, Sam O’Brien, Euan Kerr, Luke Casey, Gaffney, Luke Brady were solid in defense with Oisin Finnegan impressing with some great runs.
Seb Snow, Fitzsimons and Condon all added scores to keep the scoreboard ticking over. In addition to the scorers, Tom McGuinness and Michael Byrne played key roles up front and Diarmuid Keyes and Matthew Egan made an impact on their introduction.
After the match, Sam O’Brien accepted the cup and spoke very well on behalf of his team-mates. He thanked the referee and his officials, Kiltale GAA and the county board. He also paid tribute to Trim for a great sporting game, to the mentors and to the parents for their consistent support. The day couldn’t pass without a nod to Donal Fitzsimons of course, who was the man that started so many of these young lads hurling. O’Brien captured this very well and there’s no doubt Fitzer would be very proud of this group.
