St. Michaels had six points to spare over Moynalvey in round seven of the K. McKeown Carpentry and Home Improvements Div. 8 football league played in Carlanstown on Sunday afternoon 15th June.
St. Michaels 2-17 Moynalvey 2-11
An encounter which saw the bottom two sides in Div. 8 face off, it was home side St. Michaels who picked up the two points on offer to move up the table slightly, while Moynalvey remain bottom of the table with two rounds remaining.
From the off it was St. Michaels who led, being three points to no score up after a quarter of an hour before Moynalvey opened their account when Charlie Benson raided forward from corner back to split the Michaels uprights, leaving it 0-3 to 0-1 with seventeen minutes played.
A St. Michaels free and a Conor Bates point from play before a Barry Walsh free for Moynalvey after the ball was moved forward for indiscipline left it 0-5 to 0-2 after 26 minutes.
Two more St. Michaels points before referee Adrian Corcoran’s half time whistle left the home side 0-7 to 0-2 ahead at the break.
Three minutes after the restart Moynalvey had the deficit cut to three with a brace of points from James O’Neill and Ronan Thompson, O’Neill’s effort curled over from close to the end line after he had kept a Barry Walsh point attempt in play, 0-7 to 0-4.
St. Michaels responded with a free, before a smart save from Anthony Brien saw Moynalvey turnaround and goal themselves thirty seconds later when Ronan Thompson buried a shot to the St. Michaels net, narrowing the margin to the minimum 0-8 to 1-4.
St. Michaels and James O’Neill traded points, before a Shane Lenehan drive at goal was parried by the Michaels’ goalkeeper Graham Dooner only for Moynalvey’s Brian Conneely to rise highest and fist to the net, putting Moynalvey ahead for the first and only time 2-5 to 0-9.
The home side had the perfect response to Moynalvey’s goal with 1-1, the goal coming from Shane McDonnell to leave it 1-10 to 2-5 with forty three minutes played.
Two Moynalvey points, the first when Stephen Donoghue found Shane Lenehan with a pass for Lenehan to cut in from the right and fire over the crossbar; and the second from James O’Neill after a Stephen Donoghue ’45 fell short into his hands who turned and pointed, to draw sides level for the first time, 1-10 to 2-7 at the three quarter hour mark.
A pair of St. Michaels points were countered by a Barry Walsh point for Moynalvey leaving a point between the sides once again. Patrick Tobin converted a free for the home side, followed up by Moynalvey points from James O’Neill and Barry Walsh to level matters again, 1-12 to 2-9, with eight minutes remaining.
However, it was the home side who finished strongest, reeling off the next four points without response including a brilliantly struck ’45 from Shane McDonnell, leaving it 1-17 to 2-10 with fifty eight minutes played.
Moynalvey’s final score came from a Barry Walsh free after the ball was brought forward for indiscipline, before the an extra bit of gloss was put on the final score line when Shane McDonnell netted with literally the last kick of the game to give St. Michaels a six point winning margin and their second win of the Div. 8 league.
