O'Mahony's Marty Moroney in action against Kildalkey

Navan O’Mahony’s 2-13 Kildalkey 2-23

A late flurry from Kildalkey left some distance between the sides as Kildalkey claimed the points on offer in Round 2 of the Div 2 HL.

Kildalkey opened the scoring after five minutes, with two points in quick succession. In this time, O’Mahony’s had missed a few opportunities. A high ball into the square from Cormac O’Shea came into the possession of Shane McCarthy who fired home to give his side the lead.  Marty Moroney extended this with a pointed free a few minutes later, before the hosts pulled one back from play.

Finn Malone added his name to the score-sheet with a very impressive score. Little separated the sides with Kildalkey adding two points and Colm O’Toole splitting the posts from a placed ball for O’Mahony’s.  A Marty Moroney attempt at goal was saved by the netminder, with Malone scooping up the resulting breaking ball and firing it over.

A five minute spell saw Kildalkey dominated, scoring 1-05 in this time and giving themselves a strong lead. Moroney added two points in the closing minutes to narrow the gap and a Kildalkey pointed free on the cusp of half time left the hosts with a five point advantage.

Kildalkey extended the lead with a score early in the second half, before Malone opened the scoring for his side with a good point direct from John Foley’s puckout. Substitute Rio Russell passed a good ball to Moroney who fired over before a Kildalkey free restored the difference to five.

Sean McDermott raised a white flag in spite of pressure from the Kildalkey defence as he was striking before McCarthy scored his second goal (after being set up by O’Toole) to leave the narrowest between the sides. Less than a minute later, Moroney converted a free and the sides were level with twenty minutes remaining.

Kildalkey introduced a number of strong substitutes in the second half who had a big impact on the game and managed to edge in front, with points from Moroney and O’Toole leaving O’Mahony’s within touching distance. 1-03 from the hosts in the closing minutes killed off the game as a contest and left distance between the sides at the full time whistle.
