Dee Ranger Ladies took on neighbours Rathkenny, in the second round of the division 6 league in Rathkenny on Sunday 16th March.
The home side started the game brightly, wing back Mollie O’ Reilly delivering a quick ball directly into full forward Aoife O’ Rourke who found the net after only three minutes.
Rathkenny midfielder Jessie Kealy turned over the Dee Ranger kick out and linked up with Mollie O’Reilly who again sent a direct ball in to the full forward line in search of Aoife O’Rourke, this time the Dee Ranger defence were more alert, Áine Byrne intercepting the pass and working it up to Hannah Carolan, Hannah was fouled and free taker Eimear McCluskey converted the free to record Dee Rangers first score of the day.
Ellen Carolan over turned the Rathkenny kick out and sent a quick ball in towards Megan Malone but corner back Emily Kealy was alert to the danger and cut out the pass. She found Mollie O’Reilly who again charged forward but her pass was well read by Kellie Mooney Gorman who intercepted it and worked it up the field to Hannah Carolan, Carolan was fouled and free taker Eimear McCluskey made no mistake again converting the free.
The Rathkenny kick out was won by Dee Ranger Eimear McCluskey who charged at the goals and buried to the back of the net. Not content with one goal McCluskey pounced on the next kick out and buried it to the back of the net again, putting her side 5 points up after 10 minutes.
Dee Rangers continued to apply the pressure, the next score was a point from play after an excellent solo run from centre half back Ellen Carolan. McCluskey was on the hunt for her third goal of the game but was denied by goalkeeper Genevive Harding, Megan Malone gathered the rebound and popped it over the bar for her first score of the day.
Dee Ranger Grace Carry chipped in with two points from play to further extend the visitors lead.
Rathkenny duo Jessie Kealy and Izzy Duignan combined to get their final score of the half a well worked point kicked by Kealy.
Dee Rangers continued to apply the pressure, midfielder Eimear Clare popped over a point from play for the final score of the half. The score board read Dee Rangers 2-07 Rathkenny 1-01.
The second half throw up was won by Rathkenny, passed on to Izzy Duignan who gave an inviting hand pass into the path of Mary Kealy, Kealy connected well with the ball but was unlucky to be denied by the near post.
Kelly Farrelly and Aoibheann Sheehy recorded two points for Dee Rangers before Rathkenny’s Aoife O’Rourke hit the Dee Ranger net for the second time.
Any hopes of a Rathkenny revival were quickly put to bed when Malone and McCluskey struck a goal apiece in quick succession.
Farrelly and Sheehy again added two points before goal scorers Malone and McCluskey added two points of their own.
Credit to Rathkenny, they continued to work hard and were rewarded for their efforts after a great move up field by Jessie Kealy and Leah Reilly found the goal hungry Aoife O’Rourke who recorded her third goal of the day!
The very impressive Eimear McCluskey finished the scoring with a further goal and two points from play, leaving the end result Dee Rangers 5-16 Rathkenny 3-01.
We would like to wish a speedy recovery to Dee Ranger forward Kelly Farrelly who sustained a fractured ankle during this game.
