A Man of the Match display from Lorcan Byrne proved crucial as Kilmessan retained the Meath Under 21 hurling championship title with this one point victory over Trim in front of a large crowd at Kiltale. PHOTOS

The half forward gave one of the best individual displays we have seen this year on the hurling field and his six points from play we’re from the top drawer.

These two met in last years final in stormy conditions at Dunganny and like today’s decider Kilmessan produced the goods in the second half.

Kyle Ennis got the scoreboard working for the town side but points from Mark Horan and Finn Conroy had the eventual winners in front after ten minutes. Ennis (3), Cormac Slattery and Eoin Ryan raised white flags and Trim took control to lead 0-8 to 0-4 with eight minutes remaining. Horan pointed two frees before the break but it was Trim who held a 0-9 to 0-6 interval lead.

Byrne with his third and fourth were cancelled out by a George Douglas brace and the margin was still three midway through the second half. From there on Kilmessan dominated. The switch of full forward Horan and centre back Kris Gorman to the middler of the park was begining to pay dividends. Horan (2), Goman and another wonderful brace from Byrne had Kilmessan two in front with full time approaching. Trim came looking for a match winner but the Kilmessan defence, led by captain Harry Cahill were in no mood to surrender their title. Ennis left one in it before referee Eamonn Barry blew the full time whistle and spark joyous scenes for the Large Kilmessan following.

After the game John Brennan along with sponsor Thomas Brady (Brushes & Ladders) presented the Under 21 Hurling Championship Cup to Harry Cahill.

Kilmessan scorers: Lorcan Byrne 0-6, Mark Horan 0-5, Finn Conroy and Kris Gorman 0-1 each.

Trim scorers: Kyle Ennis 0-6, George Douglas and Cormac Slattery 0-2 each, Eoin Ryan and Joey Cole 0-1 each
