Just two positions were up for grabs at the Meath GAA Convention in Navan O’Mahony’s clubhouse last night.
Outgoing Central Council delegate Conor Tormey faced opposition from Paddy Kelly who has completed a five year term as vice chairman. The Donaghmore/Ashbourne club man retained his position by 111 votes to 83 for the Kiltale man.
Outgoing Leinster Council delegate Mairead Delaney (Dunshaughlin) with 75 votes was re-elected on the first count and was joined by Raymond Finnegan (Gaeil Colmcille) who defeated Niamh Regan (Rathmolyon) by 68 to 51 votes on count three after Keith Loughman (St Colmcille’s) had earlier been eliminated.
Chairman Jason Plunkett (Clonard) was returned unopposed to serve a second term while Damien Griffin (Na Fianna) was the only nomination for vice chairman which had been vacated by Kelly.
Ciaran Flynn (Dunsany) secretary, Nick Fitzgerald (Kildalkey) assistant secretary, Gene Smith (Nobber) treasurer, Eamonn Barry (Walterstown) coaching officer, and Brian Kelly (Seneschalstown) PRO were all returned without a contest.
Elaine Carolan (Walterstown) succeeded Jim Mullery as assistant treasurer with the Slane club man stepping down from the role.
There was also a new Oifigeach na Gaeilge with Cathal Seoighe (Clann na nGael) replacing Joe O’Brien (Skryne) who had completed a five year term.
Warm tributes were paid to Jim Mullery who stepped down after 12 years as an officer of the County Board. Jim was first elected Development Officer and then served as treasurer for seven years. He had been assistant treasurer for the past two years.
Chairman Jason Plunkett said Jim had been a great mentor to him as Development Officer. He said the county owed him a great debt.
Treasurer Gene Smith also lauded the work of the Slane club man who was given a standing ovation by delegates.
Condolences were expressed to the Flynn family following the death of Ann Flynn at the weekend, mother of county secretary Ciaran and wife of Francis, chairman of the Hearings Committee.
