Billy Byrne Cup: First win of the year for Boardsmill

March 24, 2024

The Boardsmill squad that defeated Kilskyre Moylagh in the Billy Byrne Cup

Boardsmill 1-17 Kilskyre/Moylagh 1-08

Boardsmill played host to Kilskyre/ Moylagh in round 2 of the Billy Byrne Cup, on a sunny but blustery Saturday afternoon.

Donning their new jerseys kindly sponsored by Alex Yourell and Quarryland Construction it was the home side who opened the scoring from a Liam O'Brien free. Yourell registered his first of the day before O'Brien added his second from a placed ball. The visitors responded with a free of their own before youngster Cillian Purcell notched his first point in adult hurling. Kilskyre/Moylagh added a second score from a placed ball before Boardsmill grabbed the games first goal. A diagonal ball from Ray Hatton to Purcell opened up the away teams defence, instead of shooting a sharp pass to Stevie Gibbons sent him through on goal where he left the goalkeeper with no chance. As expected Kilskyre/Moylagh didn't lie down and the Mill' men weathered a storm by keeping the visitors to just two further points. The returning Neil McLoughlin scored a point from play before two collectors items from Eamon and Jim Roche. Both men are well known for a hefty tackle, never mind a point apiece in the same game. The tens of people in attendance couldn't believe what they had seen. In fairness to Eamon he couldn't be upstaged by his little bigger brother.

Half Time Score Boardsmill 1-07 Kilskyre/Moylagh 0-4

Against the elements in the second half it was Boardsmill who made all the early running as the lively Gibbons knocked over the opening two scores. Niall Durkan continues the upward trajectory for the Mill' as he copied Gibbons by scoring two points in a row. Three points from the men from the north-west of the county stemmed the tide before McLoughlin added his second of the day. A high ball into the Boardsmill goal area resulted in a penalty been given to the travelling team. It was excellently dispatched by Ronan Kelly, before Yourell grabbed his second of the game from 60 yards. With a few personnel changes to the home team a second penalty was awarded to Kilskyre/Moylagh but this time it was Mark Hatton who got a stick to the ball to knock it away to safety. Have we conceded two penalties in the same game with different keepers facing both penalties? Answers on a postcard!! The visiting team registered their last score of the day before the Mill' finished strongest with 5 scores from Gibbons, Yourell and three from McLoughlin. A game of moments from The Roches scoring to Two Penalties conceded, even James Ashe tracked back. A great team performance from all involved say Boardsmill run out victors on a scoreline of 1-17 to 1-08.
