FL Div 7: Oldcastle deny Ballinlough

Ballinlough's Mark McCullen

Ballinlough 2-08 Oldcastle 2-11

Ballinlough welcomed Oldcastle to the park on a wet and windy Friday night and before I begin I have to thank Keith McGuinness for providing all the info for this report as I was off gallivanting, so if there’s any mistakes within…they are his not mine !!

Oldcastle opened the scoring with a point in the opening two minutes before Brandon Brunton got Ballinlough motoring with a point on the five minute mark. The visitors were to be on top in the opening half though with a strong wind advantage and they reeled off four unanswered points before Ballinlough had a gilt edged goal chance only for Jamie Casserly to fail to find the net in the 13th minute.

A Colm Mallen point lowered the deficit but two more points for Oldcastle before the 20th minute kept them well in control. Further points were traded with Collie Mallen accurate for Ballinlough before Mallen reduced the deficit to four points on the stroke of halftime, so when Referee Raymond Tynan blew the half time whistle Ballinlough trailed on a scoreline of 0-04 to Oldcastles 0-08.

Oldcastle started the second half in a similar vein as the first with an early point from play, but Ballinlough with the wind at their backs were the first to find the net with a well taken Mark McCullen goal in the 32nd minute. That score was followed up by a point from Jamie Casserly to leave just one point between the sides.

Unfortunately for Ballinlough the visitors were in no mood to allow them back into the game and after a missed 45’ for Ballinlough the Oldcastle attack kicked into gear hitting 2-02 to restore their healthy advantage in the 45th minute.

Great credit must be given to Ballinlough though and they kept battling with Kit Óg Lynch landing two points before Mark McCullen got on the end of another goal in the 50th minute to leave just four points between the teams again.

The home side had yet another glorious goal chance in the 56th minute to set up a grandstand finish, but Collie Mallen failed to capitalize (on what I’ve being told was an a sitter!!) and with Ballinlough only able to tag on one further point from the boot of Kit Óg Lynch in the 60th minute, it was Oldcastle who took victory on a score line of 2-11 to Ballinloughs 2-08.
