Offaly 1-11 Meath 1-8

Favourites Offaly were pushed all the way by a hard working Meath side in this opening round of the Leinster Minor Hurling Championship Tier 2 played in very windy but dry conditions at Ashbourne. PHOTOS

The visitors raced into a two point lead through Odhrán Fletcher and James Sampson. Meath hit back with scores from Luke Ennis, Evan Curley and Rian Porter before the games first goal arrived, Killian Wynne putting the Faithful back in front with a well worked three pointer.

From there on Meath, playing with the wind, dominated the remainder of the half. Ennis pointed again before full forward and captain James Cully found the back of the Offaly net. The same duo added points and Meath went in at the break 1-6 to 1-3 in front.

Was a three point lead enough facing into a strong wind. For long periods of the second half it looked like the Royals would hold out. Offaly narrowed the lead to one through James O’Sullivan and Fletcher. A brace from Ennis kept the home side two in front but by the 22 minute Offaly were level with a Fletcher brace.

In the remaining eight minutes the talented Fletcher raised another two white flags and corner forward Hennessy doubled his tally to earn Offaly a three point win.

Offaly scorers: Odhrán Fletcher 0-6, Killian Wynne 1-0, James Hennessy 0-2, James Sampson, James O’Sullivan, Andrew Hogan 0-1 each.

Meath scorers: Luke Ennis 0-5, James Curley 1-1, Evan Curley, Rian Porter 0-1
