Rathkenny celebrate with the Mattie McDonnell Cup at Pairc Tailteann

Rathkenny made the return to senior football in fine style after beating Duleek Bellewstown in a thrilling Intermediate Football Championship final at Pairc Tailteann.

Duleek Bellewstown seemed to have made up for last year’s disappointment early on, Rathkenny battled back to take control and just when the game seemed to be going away from Joe Sheridan’s men they kicked three points to force extra time. A penalty save from Rathkenny keeper Charlie Cullen proved crucial in extra time and Donal Curtis’ men held on to win by a point 1-18 to 2-14 and take home the Mattie McDonnell Cup.

Navan O’Mahony’s reached the semi-final but disappointed against Rathkenny. Under Ronan Kearns and Daithi Whyte, St. Pats have have made great strides and will be a force to be reckoned with in the years to come. Walterstown, Meath Hill, Castletown and Ballivor made it to the quarter finals.

In the relegation battle Dunderry went under to Longwood 2-13 to 1-15 in the final and will play Junior football in 2024.
