HL Div 2: Feed the Bucket and he will score

Boardsmill's Tadgh Cotter

Boardsmill  3-16  Blackhall Gaels 1-16

Boardsmill registered their second win of the division 2 league campaign with a hard-fought victory over Blackhall Gaels at Boardsmill.

Straight from the throw-in, Boardsmill signalled their intent for the day with some crisp passing before Ray Hatton opened the scoring with a well taken score from the wing. Blackhall quickly responded with a point from a free and were unlucky not to grab a goal as a mis-hit free caused some trouble for the Boardsmill backs before it was cleared. From the clearance the ball was worked to the Tadgh 'Bucket' Cotter who somehow stayed composed and rounded the Blackhall goalkeeper to slot to the net. This was the Buckets third goal in three games over the past 7 days, for so long he was the wrong man in the right place but it's good to see him becoming the goal poacher none of us expected him to be. Liam O’ Brien added two points from placed balls before Luke Gallagher added four points from play. Gallagher was everywhere in the first half and worked extremely hard to get his scores. Blackhall kept in touch with points from play and dead balls before Niall Bagnall dipped and weaved his way through the away team’s defence to score a magnificent point off his stick.

This left the halftime score Boardsmill 1-08 Blackhall Gaels 0-7

Playing against the breeze in the second half the mill men opened the scoring as a Liam O’ Brien 65’ deceived the Blackhall Gaels goalkeeper to find its way to the net. A perfect start for the home side who were wearing their navy away set of jerseys, to Blackhall’s credit they responded as they always do and reeled off four points in quick succession, thankfully for Boardsmill the evergreen Bert McLoughlin scored two points to stem the tide. Gallagher added his fifth point from play before Blackhall finally breached the Boardsmill rear-guard to sneak in for a goal. This usually means panic stations but to the home side's credit they defended admirably and did not allow any other goal chances to fall to the men from Batterstown and Kilcloon. With the game in the melting pot a high ball into the square was kept in play by Danny Dixon and pulled on first time by another Boardsmill youngster Mark Flood. McLoughlin, Dixon, and O’ Brien all added points just as Blackhall did from frees and play. The final two scores went to the Mill’ men through a lovely effort from Donal Flattery and a free from O’ Brien.

In what was a tough battle, the men of Boardsmill did just enough to come out on the right side of the game with some top performances all over the field. Credit to referee Shane Mooney who allowed the game to flow throughout.
