Div 3 HL: Much needed boost for Kilskyre/Moylagh

Kilskyre/Moylagh's Willie McGrath

Kilskyre/Moylagh 1-13 Longwood 0-9

Kilskyre/Moylagh boosted their prospects of remaining in Division 3 of the Hurling League with this welcome first victory of the campaign over Longwood on Saturday evening.

The introduction in the final quarter of former county player Willie McGrath who was returning after a 5-week absence through injury paid dividends as he hit 1.3 in the final 6 minutes to allow the visitors pull clear of a gallant home team.

Kilskyre/Moylagh opened the scoring when Derick Muldoon pointed a free in the 2nd minute but Longwood replied in the 6th minute with a point from a free.  Kilskyre/Moylagh hit 4 points in the next 15 minutes through 2 Muldoon frees and 2 excellent points from play by Sean Tunney.  Longwood pointed from a 65 in the 23rd minute after a goal attempt from a free was deflected out by the resolute defence.  A Muldoon free in stoppage time left the visitors leading 0.6 to 0.2 at the interval having played with the advantage of the slight breeze.

The second half opened similar to the first with points exchanged from frees in the first 4 minutes.  Muldoon pointed another free in the 6th minute after a foul on Peadar Byrne who was causing the defence all sorts of trouble with his strong running.  Sean Tunney pointed in the 8th minute following an excellent pitch length move to stretch the lead to 6 and Muldoon then hit the side netting after a great run from Kit Og Lynch.  Longwood were not going to go down without a fight and they reeled off 4 points between the 10th and 14th minutes to reduce the gap to 2 points.  They had a few other opportunities but they shot a couple of wides that might have left things interesting.  A Muldoon free in the 20th minute followed by a goal and a point from the returning McGrath in the 24th and 25th minutes gave the visitors some breathing room.  Longwood pointed 2 frees in the 26trh and 28th minutes but 2 McGrath points in the final minutes gave Kilskyre/Moylagh a welcome victory.
