U13 FL Roinn E final: Goals seal victory for St. Michaels

November 29, 2021

St. Michaels joint captains Caoimhin Clarke and Josh Carolan raise the U13 Roinn E cup at Grangegodden

St. Michaels  8-06, Moynalvey 3-11

The old adage has it that 'goals win games' but the truth is that it takes consistent excellence  to keep the scoreboard ticking over and that consistency is hard to attain and more rewarding. While the scoreline was heavily in St. Michaels favour, it didn't reflect the challenge and the work ethic that they had faced in Moynalvey and as a spectacle, the match was both very entertaining and a superb advertisement for underage football which was played in a bitterly cold Grangegoddan on Saturday afternoon last.

The boys in red and black began the match determined to make their mark and that they did. Fionn Murray opened the scoring with a pile-driver to the back of the net, Moynalvey replied with a well struck point from play but the momentum was with the St. Michaels lads and a fine effort from Joe Duffy and another major from CJ Lynch put St. Michaels six points to the good at the first water break.

Moynalvey settled well in the second quarter and they found the back of the net straight from the re-start, they dominated the entire quarter posting a total of 2-3 to just a single score for St. Michaels another goal from Murray to leave the teams all square at the half time interval, 3-1 to 2-4.

The St. Michaels half time team chat was hardly about the weather, but whatever it was about it worked, as they started the second half in a more determined manner and began to take control of the game with their forwards receiving great ball from the half back and mid-field lines and they duly converted those passes into scores from CJ Lynch (1-2), his goal was a deft flick over the advancing 'keeper from a Joe Duffy delivery, Fionn Murray (1-0) and Sean Behan (0-2). In addition, the defence was collectively working exceptionally hard to thwart the Moynalvey attack at every turn and confined them to just two points for the 15 minute spell leaving the eventual winners ahead by 5-5 to 2-6 at the second water break.

Referee Paul Mooney ran a fair and flowing match and in fairness the under pressure Moynalvey lads put in a spirited final quarter never giving up, they posted a further 1-5  however St. Michaels had the last say with scores from Joe Duffy (1-1), CJ Lynch (1-0) from a well executed delivery from Conall O'Sullivan and Diarmuid O'Malley (1-0).

Some of the skills on display from both teams were fantastic and a credit to each players hard work and that of their managers.
