Premier Div 7 final: Trim too strong for O'Mahonys

Neil Maloney clears the lines for O'Mahonys during the Premier Division 7 final against Trim at Pairc Tailteann

Navan O’Mahony’s 0-05 Trim 2-08

A physically strong and experienced Trim side had too much in the tank for the young Navan O’Mahony’s side in a cold Páirc Tailteann.

It was in fact Navan O’Mahony’s who got off to the better start, raising the first two white flags of the game with two kicks from play, one from captain Adam McEvoy and the other from Ben Forde. Several other chances were narrowly missed, with wide balls and shots dropping short into the arms of the waiting Trim goalkeeper.

Trim got their name on the scoreboard after twelve minutes with a point from a free. Only for great blocks by full back Neil Maloney and goalkeeper Niall Devlin, Trim would have taken an early lead with goals in this period. At the first water break, a point separated the sides in favour of Navan O’Mahony’s.

Trim got going quickly following the resumption, with two points from play within a minute of each other, edging in front for the first time in the game. A point from Forde levelled things up shortly afterwards and it was even scores for a five minute period.

A point from play gave Trim a lead they would hold onto for the rest of the game after twenty seven minutes. With the clock approaching half time, a Trim free put two between the sides before the interval.

Half Time Score: Navan O’Mahony’s 0-03 Trim 0-05

With only two points between the sides, it was all to play for in the second half. After a barren opening for both sides, the first score of the half came after 7 minutes. Trim were awarded a penalty and their marksman made no mistake in finding his spot in the bottom right hand corner. Both sides only managed another point before the water-break when the scoreline read 1-06 to 0-04 in favour of Fergal Lynch’s side.

To the young Navan O’Mahony’s side’s credit, they never gave up and played some great football, which was not reflected by the scoreboard. Efforts by Jack Flynn and Fionn Fitzsimons were narrowly missed and would have been scored on any other day. Trim kept plugging away at the scoreboard with a goal in the final quarter really putting the game out of Navan O’Mahony’s reach.

A final point from a free from Ben Forde finished off the scoring for the Brews Hill side who can hold their heads up high after a great year, only beaten on two occasions by a very strong Trim side.
