Blackhall Gaels 0-17 Kilmainhamwood 3-11

Blackhall Gaels fielded a third football team for the first time in over a decade on Sunday when they took on Kilmainhamwood in a sweltering Kilcloon. In front of a large home crowd it was nearly a fairy tale start for the Gaels but a late goal from the visitors was the difference in a great game of football in the opening round of the Premier Championship Division 8.

Having fielded their second team in Division 4 the night previous the Gaels were hoping to emulate their colleagues and record a second win of the weekend. All was going to plan until that late ‘wood goal dashed their hopes.

Leading 0-10 to 1-6 at the break Blackhall were always in the fight and when two second half goals went in the Gaels didn’t panic and kept the scoreboard ticking over with Johnny Meyler and Kieran Devaney contributing 12 points from the full forward line. The third goal, with two minutes left, proved decisive though. Blackhall had fought their way back into the game and the goal was a killer blow. Blackhall had a 14 yard free at the death to draw level but with most of the Kilmainhamwood team on the goal line for it, it was never going to happen and the visitors held on for 3-11 to 0-17 win.

There were fine performances out the field from Colm Fitzgerald, unrelated Dessie Fitzgerald, Colm Whitty and Sean Rattigan, while goalie for life Robbie Butler came into the game on the 40 minute mark at midfield.  Cian Lohan, Paul Codd and Michael McIver all made their adult debuts for the Gaels on despite the result, a very positive day for Blackhall.
