Mayo retained the Connacht minor football championship title thanks to a 2-13 to 1-10 victory over Galway at Tuam Stadium last night.

Tommy Lydon (penalty) and Thomas Tuffy struck the second-half goals that proved the difference for the visitors as they triumphed to their county’s 42nd provincial success in the grade.

The opening 30 minutes had been airtight in Tuam, with Fionan O’Reilly’s point separating the sides at the end of an entertaining first-half and sending Galway in with a 0-8 to 0-7 lead.

Mayo fell two behind early in the restart but Lydon’s 41st minute penalty would see them hit the front and they never looked back from there.

Gavin Forry stretched the holders’ lead to three ahead of Tuffy smashing to the Galway net on 45 minutes.

The hosts hit back with a goal of their own from substitute Fionan O Conghaile minutes later, but a brace of points from Lydon at the other end soon got Mayo motoring again and their neighbours would be reduced to 14 men in the closing stages after corner-back Vinny Gill picked up a second yellow card.
