The death has taken place of one of the oldest GAA supporters in the country.

Burrishoole GAA has led the tributes to 103-year-old Jim McManamon who supported the Mayo club all his life. Describing him as their “16th man”, Burrishoole said Jim supported generations of players over the decades.

“It is with heavy hearts in Burrishoole GAA today we learned of the passing of the great Jim McManamon,” the club said in a social media post.

“A 16th man for many years, Jim was a frequent figure on our side line and has been described as the face in the crowd that was ever present. Supporting his own kids in earlier years to in more recent times, supporting his circle of Grandchildren, all who undoubtedly did him very proud.

“The first to buy a ticket for a dinner dance, Jim and his late wife Mary had been a constant support to our club for many decades. To put it simply, Jim was a great club man. He will be greatly missed by all at Burrishoole GAA.

“We offer our condolences this evening to Jim’s family, all who have given and continue to give so much to Burrishoole GAA. Our thoughts are with Séan, Maureen, Angela, Kevin, Patsy, Séamus, Paraic and Noel, his son in laws and daughter in laws Anne-Marie, Gus, Martin, Ruth, James, Anne-Maria, Bernie and Noreen. His 31 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.”
