St Mochtas made it through to the Senior Championship Final after a memorable victory over St Marys at Haggardstown on Sunday afternoon.

The Louth Village men had to survive a late rally from the Marys before securing a 2-10 to 0-14 win with the all-important goals coming from Philip Englishby and Craig Lennon.

The Mochtas went into the last quarter with a five point advantage but that was cut to just one entering injury time to set up a tense finale. However, unlike the group game between the two sides, the Louth Village side held their nerve to come out on top.

It was St Marys who made the brighter start with two points from Jonathan Commins before Jamie Farrell got his side off the mark. The Mochtas edged ahead for the first time with points from Declan Byrne and Danny Kindlon helped them lead by 0-5 to 0-4 at the break.

After the first two points of the second half were shared, the Mochtas took control on the scoreboard when Philip Englishby scored the first goal of the game.

The Ardee side responded impressively and with Ronan Caroll and Carl Gillespie on target they got back on terms only for the Mochtas to hit back with a second goal from Craig Lennon as they went in at the break leading by 2-9 to 0-10.

St Marys took a grip of the game after the restart and brought the gap back to one with Tom Jackson among the scores, but they were unable to complete the comeback as Byrne’s late score sent the Mochtas through to the final.
