IFC relegation play-off: Emmets snatch dramatic victory over Na Piarsaigh

September 17, 2018

GLEN EMMETS 1-14

NA PIARSAIGH 3-7

Ronan Grufferty and James Butler pointed in injury-time as Glen Emmets snatched a dramatic win over Na Piarsaigh in the Intermediate Championship relegation play-off at Darver on Friday evening.

The Dundalk side looked to be on course to claim victory when they edged ahead in the closing moments but the Emmets refused to give up and fired over two late points to send Na Piarsaigh down to the Junior ranks.

It had been looking very promising for Na Piarsaigh in the opening stages as goals from Alan McCartney in the 7 th and 19 th minutes helped his team into a six-point lead.

However, the Tullyallen side gave themselves a lifeline as a goal from Keith Lynch helped cut the gap to just 2-3 to 1-4 at the break.

With Butler and Grufferty in fine form in front of the posts, the Emmets seemed to have taken control of the game as they edged ahead at the end of the third quarter. However, Na Piarsaigh were not finished and they hit the net for the third time through Niall Franklin.

It looked as if that score would be enough to secure Intermediate football for another year but the Emmets had the final say as Grufferty levelled before Butler slotted over the dramatic winner.
