Gearoid Hegarty’s father Ger has explained how his son likes to keep to himself when the championship is in full swing.

Hegarty is hoping to force his way back into John Kiely’s starting XV for this weekend’s Munster SHC clash with Tipperary after only featuring as a substitute in Limerick’s surprise defeat to Clare a fortnight ago. It came after the former Hurler of the Year was sent off on two yellow cards in the opening round win over Waterford.

"I hadn’t met him for a couple of weeks, because he gets into his own little bubble, for the want of a better word, around championship time, and we give him plenty of space," Ger Hegarty – who himself is a former Limerick star – told Limerick Live 95's Sideline Cut podcast.

"He’s living out in west Limerick. He's living out in Dromcollogher, and we tend to leave him alone.

"He gets enough stick from the outside so we tend to leave him alone. He’s in that little bubble."
